Judge blocks planned sale of Whitney Houston's Emmy Award

Judge blocks planned sale of Whitney Houston's Emmy Award

TMZ reported that the Academy includes a sticker on the bottom of every statuette produced between 1978 to 1994 that states the awards are their property.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences filed a lawsuit against Heritage Auctions claiming that the Emmy legally belongs to the Academy. Houston won the award in 1986, for a televised Grammys performance of "Greatest Love Of All", in which she beautifully belted the line-irony-free, at the time-"They can't take away my dignity".

In a ruling late Thursday, Anderson gave the first round to the Academy for establishing a strong likelihood of success on the merits of its claims.

In a victory for the Television Academy, a federal judge has ruled that Whitney Houston's Emmy can not be auctioned off. The company returned the trophy to Houston's family. All three awards were won in 1986.

Houston's family wanted to auction her 30-year-old award and asked Heritage Auctions to perform the task for them.

It seeks a restraining order to prevent Heritage, Houston's estate and her executor, sister-in-law Patricia Houston, from conducting the sale. Her statuette, like all others, had a label attached to its base explaining the academy's ownership and warning that if the victor or winner's heir wished to sell or transfer the Emmy, he or she must instead return it to the academy to "retain...in storage in memory of the recipient", according to the complaint. Anderson has set a hearing on an order to show cause why a preliminary injunction should not issue for July 7 and has told the Television Academy that it needs to put up a $10,000 bond in the interim.

A statement released to Page Six by Heritage President Greg Rohan accused the Academy of trying to intimidate the Houston family out of selling the award. In 2012, the beloved singer and star of The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale was found dead in her hotel room in Beverly Hills.
