Defiant Jeremy Corbyn rejects resign plea from deputy

Margaret Beckett 'in tears' on radio as she begs Jeremy Corbyn to quit

Former shadow cabinet minister Angela Eagle is considered a likely contender for Corbyn's position, as support for the Labor leader continues to decline.

The big Labour supporting trade unions indicated in a statement that they would not seek to stand in the way of a contest provided it was carried out "through the proper democratic procedures provided for in the party's constitution".

There was even a march in London where people voiced support for Corbyn.

"Either the Labour Party will become an anti-globalisation protest party or it's going to be the party that's able to tell people how we can best manage and change and transform globalisation and the global economy in the interests of working people".

Embattled Mr Corbyn held talks with Chief Whip Rosie Winterton this evening amid mounting speculation that he was finally set to quit.

Earlier on Wednesday, Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson said the party risked an "existential crisis" as Corbyn refused to bow to pressure to resign.

She said: "I call on Jeremy Corbyn to resign immediately and make way for someone with the backbone to confront racism and anti-Semitism in our party and in the country".

If he resigned, however, allies such as shadow chancellor John McDonnell might struggle to get the nominations they need to enter the leadership race.

Supporters of Corbyn have warned he will impose mandatory reselection of MPs and a string of other moves to give party members more control if he successfully defeats the Commons "coup" against him.

But Mr McDonnell said Mr Corbyn was "buoyant".

But last night Mr Watson had decided not be put himself forward as a candidate in the contest, saying that "the prerequisite for being a deputy is you never want to be leader".

"He needs to realise that he can't lead us into a general election", Eagle told BBC Radio 4's World at One on the verge of tears.

Insisting that the vote by MPs had "no constitutional legitimacy", h e said: "I was democratically elected leader of our party for a new kind of politics by 60% of Labour members and supporters, and I will not betray them by resigning". "But he has failed and he has no right or mandate to stay in office despite his failure and take the party down with him", she said.
