Philippines says Indonesia can enter its waters to fight pirates

Philippines says Indonesia can enter its waters to fight pirates

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte gave Indonesian forces the right to pursue pirates into Philippine waters, saying piracy is one of the main problems between the two countries. Duterte, known for his outspoken style and controversial comments, said piracy is a "crime against humanity" and encouraged Indonesian forces to "feed [pirates] to the sharks".

"We will seek ways to intensify cooperation and campaign against this menace", Duterte said.

In an act with the Philippine community in this capital, Duterte specified that if the pursuit begins in Indonesian waters and the pirates cross to Philippine waters, the authorities can continue and arrest them. In recent months the group has executed two Canadian hostages and is now holding a Norwegian national.

"We hope that there will be no more security issues in the Sulu Sea in the future, and we will conduct joint patrols to ensure security".

He said he was sorry that even shipments of coal from Indonesia destined for Philippine power plants are being affected by piracy.

"China is helping us in our drug war", he added.

Duterte said he has already discussed the issue with his Indonesian counterpart Joko Widodo during the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit that concluded on Thursday in Laos.

Both men have taken a hard-line approach to the drug trade, and executions of convicted drug traffickers have become more frequent under Mr. Widodo's presidency. "We asked for help from President Duterte to resolve the case as soon as possible", President Jokowi said during a meeting with President Duterte at the State Palace in Jakarta onFriday, September 9, 2016.

Mr. Duterte notably avoided commenting publicly on the case of Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino national who is now on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking.
