Is Obama Going To Pardon Edward Snowden?

Rights groups launch campaign for Snowden pardon

The 36-page investigative report remains classified, but a three-page summary released by the committee shows that Snowden failed an internal training for NSA employees on Section 702 of surveillance law, which targets foreign Internet traffic.

Snowden's disclosures revealed global surveillance programmes, many run by the NSA and the Five Eyes Intelligence Alliance with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments, and fueled debates around the world about mass surveillance, government secrecy and the balance between national security and information privacy.

He says he is optimistic about new technology, but the movie made him more aware of its negative aspects.

The press conference was part of a combined campaign between the ACLU, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch which aims to put pressure on President Obama to pardon the NSA whistleblower before the end of this administration. He copied and leaked classified National Security Agency information, and brought to light surveillance programs operated worldwide.

Snowden was joined by film director Oliver Stone. He then fled to Russian Federation via Hong Kong.

The intelligence panel rejected arguments that Snowden acted out of conscience and insisted that he should be held accountable for his actions.

High-profile lawyers and celebrities including writer Joyce Carol Oates and actor Martin Sheen have already signed the campaign's main prod, a petition at that urges Obama to grant Snowden clemency before the president leaves office in January.

"In short", they wrote, "we agree with you".

Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi said Wednesday: "It is important to remember, Mr. Snowden is not a whistleblower". He is not a whistleblower.

Sadly, US Congress has yet to issue an official review of the movie, but the House intelligence committee released the next best thing with its report on Snowden himself and boy, is it a doozy.

Two weeks before he began to download classified documents at an NSA installation in Hawaii, the report said, he was reprimanded after "engaging in a workplace spat" with managers.

"I can't really imagine any filmmaker more suited to this story, considering his filmography", Zachary Quinto, who plays journalist Glenn Greenwald, says of Stone. Per the Hollywood Reporter, he advised all Europeans and Americans to see the film as well, which may or may not be necessary for interested parties since Snowden's Russian cut supposedly contains an extra four minutes. "There's no there there", Wizner said. The programs collected the telephone metadata records of millions of Americans and examined emails from overseas. That program had been launched by President George W. Bush and retained by Obama. The committee determined that his disclosures led to the loss of intelligence "that had saved American lives" and cost the country billions of dollars, but it doesn't cite evidence of specific damages in the unclassified summary.
