Christie: No connection between NJ, NY incidents

"We don't believe at this time there's any evidence connecting it to the attacks in NY or Minnesota", the Republican governor said, referring to an explosion at a Marine Corps race in New Jersey Saturday.

Chris Christie said Sunday it's still unclear if the explosion that went off near a Marine Corps 5K race in his state Saturday was connected to other incidents, including one NY, but "they are terrorism".

Special Agent Michael Whitaker, a spokesman for the FBI office in Newark, said state and federal investigators were still canvassing the Seaside Park area Sunday and conducting interviews. He also declined to take questions from reporters, citing the "active, ongoing" investigation.

No damage to surrounding structures was reported after an explosive device went off at 9:35 a.

"We don't believe at this time that there's any evidence connecting [the Jersey Shore bombing] to the attacks in NY or Minnesota", Christie said in an interview Sunday with CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union".

A law enforcement source said an initial investigation suggested the explosion occurred in a dumpster but the cause was still undetermined.

Authorities said the lag in the start of the race, reportedly because of late registrations, proved fortuitous, as the bomb went off before runners were on the race course. The race was canceled after the blast.

(1335 GMT) in a plastic garbage container ahead of the 5 km race in Seaside Park, a resort about 80 miles south of New York City, the Ocean County prosecutor's office.

"If it was just a matter of minutes, in terms of difference, there would have been a good number of people running past that explosive device" because of its location along the race route, Della Fave said. "We will not rest until we find the person or persons responsible".

No one was injured in the blast, and no additional devices were found after a search at a charity 5K race.

He said those in the area have been through a lot, with Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and its aftermath, and now the bomb blast. MacArthur says that person needs to be "tracked down and brought to justice".

"It's scary", said Seaside Park resident Chris Laneve, 30, who lives about a block away from where the explosion occurred.

The FBI and US Department of Homeland Security are investigating after a small pipe bomb exploded in a little bin in New Jersey.

Race officials and local authorities canceled the event, race organizers said.

It wasn't clear when the boardwalk and beach will reopen.

It is unclear how many runners had signed up to participate in the Semper Five race.
