World's first baby born from 3-parent technique

The US team, who travelled to Mexico to carry out the procedure because there are no laws there that prohibit it, used a method that takes all the vital DNA from the mother's egg plus healthy mitochondria from a donor egg to create a healthy new egg that can be fertilised with the father's sperm.

The technique - which was legalised in the United Kingdom past year - allows parents with rare genetic mutations to have healthy babies, by replacing a mother's faulty mitochondrial DNA with another woman's during the IVF process.

New Scientist reported that the baby, a boy, was born five months ago to Jordanian parents.

According to New Scientist, the baby's mother carries the genes for a condition called Leigh syndrome, a fatal neurological disorder tat gives a lifespan of only a year or two to the affected child. The diseaseis caused by faulty genes in the mitochondria, "batteries" that energise human cells and are inherited from the mother, the magazine reported.

The couple had been trying to conceive for the past 20 years and even faced four miscarriages and lost the first two children due to the syndrome.

To overcome this, a team from the New Hope Fertility Center in NY led by John Zhang chose to use the three parent method. In the 1990s, fertility doctors tried to enhance the quality of women's eggs the cellular material that contains mitochondria (cytoplasm), from healthy donor eggs. The egg is then fertilized using the husband's sperm.

The first baby in the world brought to the world using a procedure, which combines the DNA of three people, seems healthy and normal.

The procedure, called spindle nuclear transfer, involves removing the healthy nucleus from one of the mother's eggs and transferring it to a donor egg which had had its nucleus removed. This embryo was then implanted in the mother and the child was born nine months later.

"Some of the babies went on to develop genetic disorders, and the technique was banned", the media report stated.

The process was carried by a team from the New Hope Fertility Centre in NY, led by John Zhang, but had to be undertaken in Mexico as the treatment has not been given approval in the US.

That report was requested by the Food and Drug Administration, which is prevented by Congress from considering applications to approve testing the technique in people.

Dr. John Zhang, who led the scientific team, told New Scientist that the boy was born in Mexico because "there are no rules" there.

Prof Alison Murdoch said that the three-person technique should be achieved with caution.

"When it comes to saving lives, what we did was ethical", explained Zhang.

So-called "three parent babies" actually have more like 2.001 parents, according to experts.

For instance, Charles Mohan, CEO of the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, previously told Live Science that such treatments let parents make decisions to foster the health of their children early on.

The five-month-old boy has the usual DNA from his mum and dad, plus a tiny bit of genetic code from a donor.

Mr Ilic asked: "Was this the first time ever they performed the technique or were there other attempts and they are reporting this one because it was successful?"
