Nissan sales rise 4.9 pct., bucking forecasts of down month

Will Ford Start 4Q16 on a Weak Note

"Key economic fundamentals like a strong jobs market, rising personal incomes, low fuel prices and low interest rates continue to point toward strong industry performance", said Mustafa Mohatarem, GM's chief economist.

An indicator of strength of consumer spending, the pace of USA auto sales slowed during the summer months of 2016 despite low oil prices.

Major automakers are expected on Monday to report their second straight decline in monthly US sales as heavy discounting has failed to bring demand up to last year's robust September sales.

Vehicle makers reported mixed results on Monday: Nissan's sales rose 4.9 per cent over last September; Hyundai and Subaru reported four per cent sales gains; Toyota's sales rose 1.5 per cent; General Motors' and Honda's sales were flat for the month; Fiat Chrysler's sales fell one per cent; Ford and Volkswagen each reported eight per cent declines.

GM said pickup sales fell 15.5 percent for its Chevrolet Silverado and 8.5 percent for its GMC Sierra. Fiat Chrysler spent $4,302 per vehicle on deals, up 23 percent.

Fiat Chrysler's Ram 1500 pickup truck showed a sales increase of 29 percent.

Ram sales were up 27% in September helping offset the hit FCA's passenger cars took last month.

"We continue seeing strong customer demand, especially for vans and pickup trucks, including our all-new Super Duty", said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

But after six straight years of growth, demand is clearly slowing.

"Toyota outpaced the industry to be the No. 1 retail brand in September, led by Camry, RAV4, and Corolla, and the fourth quarter outlook is strong thanks to our best light truck supply of the year".

Nissan sold 127,797 cars and light trucks in the USA last month, a 4.9 percent gain from a year earlier. Analysts were expecting sales to fall 1.4% according to Bloomberg.

GM, the top-seller in the United States, showed sales down 0.6 percent.

- Toyota Motor Co.'s sales rose 1.5 percent to 197,260.

General Motors Co. reported sales slipped 0.6% to 249,795, amid a planned pullback in fleet deliveries. The CR-V, the top-selling SUV in the US, continued rolling along with a 6.5 percent increase for September.

"Much of the automotive industry's focus recently has been on rising incentives and very little sales growth, however average transaction prices continue to rise across the industry, climbing almost 3% in September 2016 from the previous year", said Tim Fleming, analyst for Kelley Blue Book.

In contrast to most analysts' expectations, Toyota and GM executives said on Monday that a new record this year was within reach.
