Comcast expands deployment of 1 TB data cap

Comcast expands deployment of 1 TB data cap

Most people don't use anywhere close to 1TB, but five or ten years ago you would have been able to say the same thing about a 300GB cap.

Comcast claims that 99 percent of its customers use less than 1TB a month, however the company will offer an unlimited option for $50 more per month.

The usage limits are not a hard cap, so those who go over the threshold will not see their service interrupted.

Per the current policy, those overage charges will not exceed $200 each month no matter how much data a residential customer uses. After that, you will be automatically charged $10 for each 50GB block past 1TB.

The good news, for most customers, is that limit is high - 1 terabyte a month.

The ISP's network can only handle so much data traffic, so it has become necessary for them to apply data caps in certain areas.

The program is called the "Xfinity Terabyte Internet Data Usage Plan".

The FCC doesn't now have any rules prohibiting Internet service providers from capping data, and hasn't ever suggested that pay-per-byte billing is illegal. As this rolls out, Comcast is offering subscribers two courtesy months; users will not be billed the first two times they exceed a terabyte. The expansion, which occurs November 1, will place the 1 TB usage limit in 30 markets, including parts of California and Texas, the notable exception being NY and the rest of the Northeast.

As it stands, customers in Comcast cap "trial" markets face a cap of 1 terabyte per month, after which a user can either pay $10 per each additional 50 gigabytes, or pay an additional $50 per month to enjoy the same unlimited data they used to.

Still, the change won't be a welcome one to fans of online gaming, 4K streaming, or numerous data-intensive activities we reserve for home internet connections. It doesn't affect Comcast's northeast customer base - and that's intentional, said Charlie Douglas, a company spokesman. Although the cap limits your ability to use the internet service, it has been somewhat necessary as data rates increased.
