Terror suspect arrested in Germany after 2-day manhunt

A police spokesman says fellow Syrians led to the arrest of a Syrian whom authorities allege may have been preparing a bomb attack in Germany. And so the suspect vanished, leaving behind about 3 pounds of highly explosive materials in his apartment and setting in motion a manhunt that would end 50 miles south in Leipzig, with Mohamed A and two other Syrian refugees.

Authorities captured Albakr after three other Syrian migrants recognized him from police photos and tied him up in their apartment.

Meanwhile, Albakr's Syrian flatmate has been formally remanded in custody as a suspected co-conspirator of a "serious act of violence" while two other of his associates, who had been detained earlier, have been released.

Jaber al-Bakr, 22, was arrested in the eastern city of Chemnitz after explosives were found in a flat.

Criminal police chief Michaelis said that, at this stage of the investigation, "the behavior and actions of the suspect now speak for an IS context", but didn't provide any more details.

The tip about the apartment came from the German interior intelligence services, he said.

In July, two attacks carried out by refugees, in which multiple people were injured and the assailants were killed, were claimed by Islamic State.

Police launched a manhunt for Al-Bakr on Saturday after discovering what authorities said was 1.5 kilograms of risky explosives and other material - similar to that used in attacks in Paris and Brussels - in an apartment in a housing block in Chemnitz.

A group of Syrian refugees may have helped prevent a major terrorist attack from taking place in Germany, after they held down another refugee inside an apartment in Leipzig while waiting for local police to arrive.

Federal prosecutors in Germany say there is no evidence a young Syrian man arrested in an alleged bomb plot Monday had picked a target to attack.

The incident comes after a string of arrests across the country of refugees suspected of plotting terrorist acts and added new fuel to an ongoing debate about the whether the hundred of thousands of migrants, who flocked to the country a year ago, increased the risk of attacks on German soil.

Albakr, who is from Damascus, was arrested shortly after midnight in the eastern city of Leipzig.

German daily Bild reported that Albakr had written on an internet network for Syrian refugees that he was at Leipzig's main rail station and seeking accommodation. One of the men then took a picture of the suspect and went to the police station to show the picture.

That will prove unwelcome news for Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose conservatives have lost support to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party over her open-door policy toward refugees and migrants. "I won't accept such a thing - especially here in Germany, the country that opened its door to us", he added.

He was motivated by Islamic extremism and likely linked to the Islamic State group, police and prosecutors said.
