Ryan Moore gets his revenge with Ryder Cup-clinching victory

Matt Kuchar of the United States celebrates after sinking a putt on the 13th green during afternoon fourball matches of the 2016 Ryder Cup

It was an impressive display of teamwork and intensity from both teams on the course at Hazeltine National Golf Club, but the USA proved to be the dominant side, owning Sunday's singles matches (7-4-1) on its way to capturing its first Ryder Cup since 2008.

"I consider everybody, whether it's the European side, captains, vice captains. a big Ryder Cup family", Reed said, said just moments after his 1-up victory set the tone for the Americans' 17-11 win, their first since 2008 and only their third dating to 1993.

The 24-year-old Pieters, who triumphed 3 and 2 in his last-day singles against JB Holmes and lost in the company of Englishman Lee Westwood in Friday's opening foursomes, was Europe's leading scorer with four points from five matches.

Match of the day: Phil Mickelson made 10 birdies and Sergio Garcia made nine birdies.

Moore got his revenge Sunday, rallying from 2-down with three holes to play to pull out the victory over Westwood. Then, as if scripted in a made-for-TV special, Reed answered back with a 35-footer for a birdie of his own and pointed his finger at McIlroy.

The win helped heal the wounds of losing the last three Ryder Cups, including the "Miracle of Medinah" in 2012 when Davis Love III was also captain. Europe earned 3 points in the first five matches but it wouldn't matter as the USA won five of the final six to win 17-11.

Team golf instantly makes the game more intriguing and, beyond that, it brings out the emotions and excitement that are often lacking in the sport. "I would have loved to have rested them all once but it just didn't quite happen". To be a part of the Ryder Cup, I don't look at it as just the Ryder Cup family and the US team.

A celebration that started on the 18th hole at Hazeltine National Golf Club when Ryan Moore made a par to win 1-up against England's Lee Westwood - the clinching point for the Americans - will continue for at least two years after the US won its first Ryder Cup in four attempts.

"We need to build on this", Mickelson said.

"We're all gutted and disappointed, and we will be back stronger to fight in two years' time in Paris".

The U.S. wins started with Patrick Reed's thrilling 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy. "I wanted to go out there and lead by example and give off the right energy and put as much blue on the board as possible".

That American depth is the reason they are considered favorites at most Ryder Cups, past and present.

"I am running on fumes", McIlroy told reporters following Europe's 17-11 loss to the United States in the 41st Ryder Cup.

During the Ryder Cup trophy presentation, European captain Darren Clarke noted Arnold Palmer, who passed away the previous Sunday, must be looking down and smiling. We all came together, the 12 of us, the vice captains, the caddies, Captain Love.

"No I can handle it", said Garcia, who has played 70 major championships in a row since 1999 and 73 overall without a victory. "Probably a fitting end to have it a tie", Mickelson said.

Danny Willett says the behaviour of some home fans at the Ryder Cup proves his brother's controversial magazine article was right.

"We play week-in, week-out on the PGA TOUR and they couldn't be nicer to us". Yes, it's great that we had success this week, but it's not about one year or one Ryder Cup.
