Turkey's president tells Iraqi leader to 'know his place'

"The army of the Turkish republic has not lost its quality to a degree to receive instructions from you", he said. "You are not my interlocutor, you are not at my level", Erdogan told a meeting in Istanbul, in comments addressed to Abadi. "We have come to the belief that Turkey is not keen on resolving any issues or withdrawing its troops from Iraqi territory".

"I do think. the use of (U.S. and coalition) enablers and trainers in Iraq, which has had some positive effect, are very much in our interest". "You should know that we will do what we want to do".

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, has said the battle to liberate Mosul will begin on October 19.

Kurdish Peshmerga fighters take up their position during a fight against militants from the Islamic State terrorist group near Mosul, Iraq.

Turkey has ignored these requests and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said last week that the country's forces would stay "no matter what the Iraqi government in Baghdad says".

He added Turkey could not be "a mere spectator" over developments in Iraq: "If Iraq and Syria are in trouble, it is Turkey's utmost responsibility to put all kinds of efforts into solving the problem and take measures".

Ankara maintains an estimated 2,000 troops in Iraq - around 500 of them in the Bashiqa camp in northern Iraq, training local fighters who will join the battle to recapture Mosul, according to Turkish media reports.

Baghdad complained about the December 4 deployment of troops to the site near Mosul, calling it a violation of Iraqi sovereignty and insisting that Turkish forces be withdrawn.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry recently called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council over the presence of the Turkish troops in Iraq as well as a decision by the Turkish parliament to extend the deployment by another year.

The spokesman for the USA -led coalition helping the Iraqi military on Monday defended recent pronouncements that the operation to retake Mosul is imminent, saying the advanced warning gives civilians hope they will soon be liberated and encourages defections of extremist fighters.

"We are here to demonstrate our support for Turkey's stance and will to intervene in the crisis of Mosul", said Rabee al-Hafidh from the Protect Mosul movement, which organized Sunday's demonstration.
