Note 7 Southwest Airlines Incident: Smoke From Replacement Device Prompts FAA Investigation

South Korean giant Samsung Electronics said Thursday it is going to examine the mobile phone that caught fire aboard a United States plane and forced its evacuation, to check if it is one of the replacement Galaxy Note 7 phones.

Green said he had just tucked the phone into his pocket as flight attendants were doing a safety briefing when he saw smoke.

As earlier, Samsung stopped selling its Galaxy Note 7, because it catches fire due to its battery issue.

Brian Green added that there was a black square icon on the device's packaging, a symbol which Samsung added to distinguish old, certified unsafe devices from the replacement models.

In a statement, Samsung has said that they can't confirm the incident until they retrieve the device.

"Until we are able to retrieve the device, we can not confirm that this incident involves the new Note7".

The incident prompted fresh investigations by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Federal Aviation Administration. That came after reports surfaced in August of the Galaxy Note 7 overheating, burning users, and in some cases, exploding.

Airport officials said there were 75 people on the plane and no injuries were reported.

According to The Verge, Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville to Baltimore was evacuated on Wednesday during the boarding process after a smoked Note 7 was spotted.

But Samsung is in the process of recalling millions of the devices because of issues with the battery.

Smoke was reported in the cabin at 9:20 a.m. while the plane was at the gate.

Smoke from a Samsung device prompted a United States airline to evacuate a flight.

He dropped it on the floor and a "thick grey-green angry smoke" started pouring out of the device, which eventually burned through the carpet and scorched the sub-floor of the plane.

A Samsung representative said, "There is no evidence that this incident is related to the new Note7".

Southwest warns on its website that passengers with the Samsung device must carry them on the plane instead of checking them in luggage.
