Gambians rejoice as new president Adama Barrow returns

Gambia's new president solidifies position as he returns home

After taking oath of office in Senegal, Barrow remained in the neighbouring country as former president Yahya Jammeh had refused to step down after being defeated in polls in December 2016.

-On Adama Barrow's inauguration day, there was silence on the streets of Banjul.

President's Barrow's Vice president Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang was also at the airport to receive the president.

The Swedish UN ambassador, Olof Skoog, who holds the security council's presidency, said: "We shouldn't just turn our back on Gambia now and walk away to the next situation but really make sure that we stay the course and support democracy". Many Gambians are jubilant, and Barrow's return was also heralded as a sign of the success of regional intervention in securing a democratic transition, with the hashtag #LessonsfromGambia trending across much of Africa after Jammeh's departure.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader in his contribution to the debate called on the new government in Gambia to work towards electoral reforms in the country.

"We expect a lot of things from Barrow", said 26-year-old Modou Fall.

Barrow has asked the troops to stay for six months to provide security, said Mohamed Ibn Chambas, special representative of the U.N. secretary-general and head of the U.N. Office for West Africa and the Sahel.

Barrow has assured Jammeh he will have all the legal rights given to an ex-president, which under Gambian law include immunity from prosecution, barring a vote by two-thirds of the national assembly.

When he left, Banjul exploded in celebration, with music blaring from speakers and people dancing in the streets.

The President's biggest challenge will be restoring the government's depleted cash reserves.

The coming months will be crucial to building a country without a climate of fear and working toward reconciliation. He has vowed greater freedoms and reforms to the security forces and the constitution. But it emerged that she might be above the constitutional age limit for the post, and Barrow said he will form a vetting committee for further appointments. "His arrival is raising my confidence in the new government", said a supporter named Ebrima Bah, who was waiting at the airport.
