Brunhilde Pomsel, former secretary of Nazi propagandist, dead at 106

Brunhilde Pomsel former secretary of Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels

Brunhilde Pomsel, a secretary who worked in Joseph Goebbels' office during the Holocaust, helping one of the worst war criminals of the 20th century to churn out Nazi propaganda, died on January 27 in Munich, the Washington Post reported. Pomsel said she had believed that Jews deported were relocated to the Sudetenland, a portion of Czechoslovakia annexed by Germany in 1938, and that concentration camps were correctional facilities for people who had disturbed the peace.

Pomsel was born in Berlin in 1911 and worked as a shorthand writer for a Jewish businessman until 1933 when she started working for Berlin Radio and joined the Nazi Party. "But she was still very interested in global politics". He was one of the most well-educated members of the higher Nazi ranks but also "one of the more radical and virulent anti-Semites" within the regime, said Steven Luckert, a curator at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

"I've personally done nothing evil, but I blame myself for being, at that time, too uninterested in politics", Pomsel said, according to Daily Mail.

"Those people nowadays who say they would have stood up against the Nazis - I believe they are honest in meaning that, but believe me, majority wouldn't have", Pomsel said.

"What she recounted in the film is a warning to the current and future generations", he said. "But no matter how elegant and well-fitting his suits were, he limped", she said, recalling his club foot.

She described Goebbels as a vain man, whose hate-filled public speeches were hard to reconcile with what she said was his considerable charm when not in the spotlight.

In the documentary, Pomsel shared her recollection of Goebbels as "a big pig" and a "ranting dwarf".

Still, Pomsel said, "when the Propaganda Ministry recruited me to work for Goebbels I couldn't say no".

Goebbels committed suicide with his wife towards the end of World War II after poisoning their six children.

Pomsel and her colleagues surrendered to the Russians, who made her a prisoner for five years.

Pomsel never married and left no family. In a 2011 interview with German newspaper Bild she claimed she only learned of the atrocity after she was released from the Russian detention camps. Her skill as a typist brought her to the office of Goebbels, the Nazi minister of "public enlightenment and propaganda". "There is no justice, however", she added, cryptically.
