Trump slams Turnbull on phone over 'worst deal ever'

Turnbull announces Hunt health minister

Less than an hour after White House press secretary Sean Spicer offered assurances the U.S. would uphold a deal to take in 1,250 refugees from Australia, Trump continued to fume about the agreement, which had sparked the heated conversation with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull this weekend.

In a tense telephone call with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, President Donald Trump has reportedly accused Canberra of trying to export terrorists to the United States, pledging to review a "dumb deal" to take in hundreds of asylum seekers.

Turnbull insisted today that relations between the diplomatic partners were strong despite reports that Trump had berated him.

"I have a lot of respect for Australia, I love Australia as a country but we have a problem where, for whatever reason, President Obama said they were going to take probably well over a thousand illegal immigrants who are in prisons".

During the call, Trump labeled the resettlement plan - to send more than 1,000 people who had originally sought asylum in Australia onto the US - "the worst deal ever", the paper reported. In return, Australia agreed to take some refugees in the United States from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

The White House, for its part, did not criticize the leaking of the conversation.

Then, on Thursday, the U.S. Embassy in Canberra confirmed that the Trump administration agreed to uphold the deal and accept the refugees into the U.S. Alas, the damage was done. According to the Washington Post, the call was meant to last an hour, but Trump abruptly ended it after 25 minutes.

The "one-off" deal was announced in November with former president Barack Obama agreeing to take an unspecified number of refugees from Australia's offshore detention centres.

He also blasted a refugee resettlement deal with Australia in a late-night tweet, calling it a "dumb deal" and throwing the fate of more than 1,000 displaced people into doubt.

'We are taken advantage of by every nation in the world virtually'.

President Donald Trump is creating doubts over whether he'll honor an agreement with Australia that he called a "dumb deal".

A Trump tweet quickly followed.

Rucker said Trump "didn't let diplomatic niceties get in the way of how he felt about that refugee policy", and tbh, we're not sure he's let anything get in the way of his feels, ever.

However a White House official told the ABC in a statement: "The president is still considering whether or not he will move forward with this deal at this time". Meanwhile Turnbull was still claiming that he had gotten Trump's assurances in that phone call.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten called on Turnbull to be open about his interaction with Trump, saying The Washington Post version of the call was worrying.

Trump signed an executive order on Friday banning refugee entry to the Unites States.

"We don't cut corners or compromise on keeping Australians safe and the USA government has exactly the same attitude", Turnbull told reporters.
