Trump should not meddle in European Union's affairs: EU leaders

European leaders are now describing Trump as a threat

European Union leaders said they agreed to stick together in dealing with Donald Trump, but at their first summit since he took office they were at odds on how far to confront or engage with the new US president.

The Prime Minister updated the 27 other European Union leaders about her visit to Washington and advised them to engage "patiently and constructively" with the new administration.

"I think this may be in the Rome declaration as well".

May told them the European Union should work "patiently and constructively" with the new president because being antagonistic toward him would "only embolden those who would do us harm, wherever they may be", her office said.

The EU "is an overly complex fairly bloated bureaucratic organization", Malloch said.

Theresa May has been labelled "Donald Trump's messenger" as she arrives in Malta to tell European Union leaders they must boost defence spending.

"There is room for explanations because of the impression that the new administration does not know the EU in detail, but in the European Union details matter", he said.

And that is not only because of Brexit, a situation forced on the European project by David Cameron who took what he must have thought was a calculated risk by calling a referendum on EU membership, a move that was more meant to boost his chances of re-election than to given the British people a stronger voice.

One leading EU Parliamentarian said on Tuesday that the US President was using the United Kingdom as a Trojan horse to destroy the EU.

"[There was] this good and strong will to protect our unique relationship with United States, the translatlantic guarantee for freedom and global order", he added.

"Europe has its fate in its own hands", Merkel said.

Tusk also identified an internal danger for the European Union: the rise of "anti-EU, nationalist, increasingly xenophobic" populist movements in countries like France and the United Kingdom, for which Donald Trump has expressed support.

"On defense and security cooperation, we are united in our recognition of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as the bulwark of our collective defense, and today we've reaffirmed our unshakable commitment to this alliance", she said.

In an open letter to Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the factional heads of the Liberals (ALDE) and the conservatives (EVP) in the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt and Manfred Weber, said, "These statements demonstrate outrageous malice toward the values that constitute the EU".

European countries sometimes complained that President Obama neglected them in favor of a focus on Asia.

'Today we are communicating with the United States mainly on Twitter'.

"We need tax revenues, we need a fair tax system, in order to make necessary investments in our society". We do not believe in walls, and on bans.
