Iran To Test Missile, Radar Systems, One Day After New US Sanctions

The White House also included Iran on a list of nations whose citizens face a temporary ban on travel to the U.S.

The sanctions came after Trump's national security advisor said Wednesday that the USA was "officially putting Iran on notice" for the missile test in a display of toughness by the Trump administration, which has heavily denounced the nuclear deal the previous administration of Barack Obama concluded with Tehran.

Despite the tough talk, the new sanctions represent a continuation of the Obama administration's limited punishment for Iran's ballistic missile activity and avoid a direct showdown with Tehran over the nuclear deal itself.

The U.S. slapped new sanctions on Iran on Friday after the Trump administration signaled it wanted to punish Tehran for its latest ballistic missile test.

These actions "underscore what should have been clear to the worldwide community all along about Iran's destabilizing behavior across the Middle East", Michael Flynn, national security advisor to President Trump, said in a statement.

As a result of Friday's action, all property and interests of those designated subject to USA jurisdiction are blocked, and US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.

"I think what this administration is doing, which I agree with, is saying, 'We have a new administration, and we're going to hold you, Iran, to account, '" he said. On Jan. 27, Iran test fired a ballistic missile capable of traveling 2,500 miles and of carrying a nuclear warhead.

The Pentagon chief James Mattis, just hours after the U.S. sanctions were announced, said that Iran was "the single biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world".

The official said that no individual or entity which had sanctions dropped under the JCPOA was impacted by Friday's new sanctions. "Not me!" Trump tweeted Friday morning.

Iran's state media said the Revolutionary Guards were testing out their missile systems, radars, command centres and cyber warfare systems in a show of defiance.

The Trump administration's actions against Iran are warranted, and more will be on the way, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen.

The Trump administration has taken a hard line on Iran, banning its citizens from entering the United States and accusing the nation of interfering in the affairs of USA allies in the Middle East.

U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the nuclear deal on numerous occasions.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Sunday that the nuclear deal former President Obama had reached with Tehran was all but certain to remain in place.
