Rangers turmoil as Warburton denies quit claim

Warburton not worried

Rangers remain in a state of farce on Saturday morning after announcing Mark Warburton has resigned as the club's manager.

However, Warburton told the BBC he had not stood down from his post and was unaware of the club's statement.

Former Forest manager Alex McLeish has been linked with a return to Rangers.

Warburton, assistant manager David Weir and the club's head of recruitment Frank McParland apparently left the club on Friday night.

The statement said the club had been advised earlier this week that the trio "wished to resign their positions and leave the club on condition that Rangers agreed to waive its rights to substantial compensation". "We are clearly short of where we expected to be at this time", the statement read.

Warburton had come under real pressure in recent weeks following a torrid run of form, during which Rangers had been spanked 4-1 by rivals Hearts.

The club said that all three had "been notified in writing that their notices of termination have been accepted" following a board meeting at Ibrox. When you get asked to come to a club like Rangers then it's for sure a hard decision to turn that down.

Warburton's men host Morton in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup this weekend and the boss needs a result to keep the critics at bay.

GRAEME MURTY makes two changes from the Rangers side that drew with Ross County as he prepares to take charge of the Gers for their Scottish Cup tie.
