Nunes Encourages Whistle-Blowers To Come Forward On Trump Surveillance

Trump will receive a briefing from Nunes on Wednesday afternoon

Rep. Devin Nunes, the House Intelligence Committee chairman, has apologized privately to his Democratic colleagues, but is still defending his decision to openly discuss and brief President Donald Trump on typically secret intercepts that he says swept up communications of the president's transition team.

The first hearing took place on 20 March and contained explosive testimony from Mr Comey who said the Trump campaign team was under FBI investigation for ties to Russian officials.

Nunes also revealed that President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has also volunteered to testify before the committee.

Nunes, who served on Trump's transition team executive committee, was criticized by Democrats for bypassing his own committee to present his claims directly to Trump, who is now under investigation.

"The counsel for Paul Manafort contacted the committee yesterday to offer the committee the opportunity to interview his client", committee chairman Devin Nunes said.

Although Judge Napolitano was dropped by the television network for claiming Obama's administration had asked the British intelligence agency to carry out the spying, Trump said he still "respects" the Judge.

Nunes remarks followed earlier statements he made saying he had seen no evidence Trump was wiretapped as did his counterpart on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Nunes said he believed the surveillance was all done legally, and that the information collected "appears to be all legally collected foreign intelligence under" the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Speaking first, he said that Manafort - who has been accused of having undisclosed entanglements with Russian Federation, including allegations of million-dollar payouts from a pro-Russia political party - had volunteered to be interviewed by the committee. Capitol Hill sources told Fox News Nunes received his information from numerous sources.

The intelligence is said to leave no doubt the Obama administration, in its closing days, was using the cover of legitimate surveillance on foreign targets to spy on President-elect Trump, according to sources.

Representative Jackie Speier said Mr Nunes apologised to the minority members of the committee.

"It must have been a very strong push back about the nature of Monday's hearing", Schiff said.

Trump provided no evidence.

But it is far more likely, they say, that what Nunes was talking about was surveillance of foreigners talking to foreigners, who were speaking about Trump and his aides.

"Also importantly, why there are so many leaks out there, why are American citizens being unmasked?"
