Mason County authorities are considering possible charges, ranging up to first-degree murder, against a man who shot and killed another man he found showering Saturday morning at his place of business.

The homeowner continued to investigate and found Nathaniel Joseph Rosa, 31, in the bathroom taking a shower, police said.

In a statement released Monday, the Mason County Sheriff's Office identified the man who was arrested as Bruce Fanning.

A Mason County homeowner shoots an intruder in the shower at his next-door property. Fanning left his business residence and retrieved a hand gun from his home before returning.

The homeowner said he arrived at the home, one of at least two that he owns in the Belfair, Washington area, at around 8 a.m. and noticed that a door had been kicked in, according to police. He was arrested by the police "on suspicion of second-degree murder" for killing Rosa. Court records indicate Fanning said he shot at Rosa three times, rather than the four times reported by other sources.

"He was a great uncle, he is a great uncle", said Christa Farster, who said she is Fanning's niece. "And we've contacted our local prosecutor, explained the circumstances to him, and he agrees that second-degree murder was an appropriate charge in this case".

He is being held on $250,000 bail and his arraignment is set for April 10.

When Fanning of Belfair approached and confronted him, Rosa allegedly began to threaten Fanning.

Washington law says "no person in the state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting by any reasonable means necessary, himself or herself, his or her family, or his or her real or personal property".
