Indian officials to lose red beacon lights atop their cars

No red beacons for VIPs from May 1, 2017

Vehicles involved in emergency and relief and rescue services, ambulances, and fire services, will, however, be allowed to put blue beacons, the minister said.

Following the Union government's announcement to ban red beacons on official vehicles from May 1, chief ministers of many states and Union ministers have embraced the decision and removed the red beacon from their respective vehicles, just a day after the announcement was made. Even UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had warned officials about the misuse of red beacons which are causing huge inconvenience to people.

Though the Centre had announced that the order would come into effect from May 1, Palaniswami chose to remove it immediately.

With a view to strengthening healthy democratic values in the country, the Central Government took another historic step today.

The restrictions when the most protected leaders of the country are on the move will also continue, especially the President or the PM.

The Centre yesterday chose to ban red beacons atop cars of all ministers, politicians and bureaucrats, ending a privilege that was seen as the ultimate status symbol.

The Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice S Muralidhar have never used the red light and nor have they ever taken Personal Security Officers, which they are entitled to.

In Calcutta, none of the ministers in the Mamata government was willing to speak officially on the Union cabinet's decision. Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has stated that the official notification will be issued after public hearing.

Asked if there would be exceptions like the President or the Prime Minister for the use of red beacon on their cars, Jaitley said there can't be any exceptions "when the rule itself is not there in the rule book".

Days ago, Modi went to the Delhi airport to receive Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina "in normal traffic", which means no traffic restrictions were in place throughout the route.

Three judges had removed the beacons on Thursday itself following the Centre's decision to do away with VIP culture.

Modi's politically shrewd move has been widely welcomed, but the main opposition Congress party has taken a dig at the decision.

The AAP government in Delhi was the first to declare in February 2015 that its ministers won't use red beacons in their official cars.
