Why Scientists Are Marching For Science

Global warming: Science or dogma?

Spurred partly by the release of a White House budget proposal that included massive cuts to federal research funding, they decided to make a postconference detour to Washington, D.C., to join the April 22 March for Science.

While he does have some concerns about the politicization of science, Ira Wilson, professor of health services, policy and practice, thinks that it is more important for scientists and its advocates to "stand up and be counted" in a time when science is being both ignored and politicized.

I bring all this up because the knowledge nerds in the science community are mad that we finally have a president who doesn't read books and believes rising ocean levels mean greater opportunities to sell oceanfront property in Nebraska. It protects our air and water, preserves our planet, saves lives with medical treatments, creates new industries, puts food on our tables, educates the next generation, and safeguards our future. "A child asking questions about the world is science, baking a cake is science".

Others argue that science has deeper problems, such as the shortcomings of the peer review process, that they deem outweigh those caused by the current United States administration.

"It clearly has a partisan framing", said Roger A. Pielke Sr., senior research scientist, Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder.

In Coimbatore, the organisation for science education, School of Science, is organising the satellite march around the city's race course. She has also received grants for quake hazard assessment and geologic mapping from the United States Geological Survey.

Before the march begins, the organizers have arranged "teach-ins" starting at 9am, and guest speakers at a rally from 10am onward. But the march's biggest impact could be on the participants themselves, Monger said. And the Sedona, Arizona march is called the "Women's March for Earth and Science". Are you anxious that casual observers could see this as scientists politicizing this?

Within a week of launching a website, the movement had gained a Twitter following of more than a million people, he says. For over twenty years, he worked as a high-energy physicist and particle accelerator designer at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and was a member of the team that discovered the top quark, the heaviest known form of matter. It is for anyone who wants to ensure that research is continued, that we can continue to collaborate globally and that research is allowed to be accessed by the public.

March for Science Toronto hopes this protest will not only put pressure on the USA administration to "accept what basic research tells them" but also reverse some of the damage caused by the Harper Government.

"I march because fundamental research is the best way for us to know not only ourselves better, but the reality of the world and universe that we live in".

"I suspect he's against biased science being misused to promote a specific agenda", Mr. Spencer said in an email.

The march is a response to the "perceived exclusivity of science", as scientists want the general public to understand that everyone is part of the scientific endeavour, Alexander said.

Bruce Monger, a lecturer at Cornell who teaches earth and atmospheric sciences, is organizing another busload of about 50 undergraduates heading to the march in Washington from the university's main campus in Ithaca, N.Y. He said it's time that researchers speak up and make the public aware of the value of science.

The campaign - which calls for science to be robustly funded and publicly communicated as a "pillar of human freedom and prosperity" - is likely to be the largest ever mass demonstration by the scientific community. "The anti-science movement is killing people", said Natalie Haines in a Facebook message.

Toronto-based Blake Williams told CTVNews.ca over email that he is marching for his father, who suffered a stroke a few years ago. This money would go a long way to find treatments for diseases that will greatly affect our aging population and are extremely costly for Medicaid and Medicare. "This medication not only saved his life but it saved him from having to suffer terrible long-term side effects", Williams wrote.
