Clement: Stoke clash is a must-win game

Alvaro Negredo is Middlesbrough's leading league scorer with eight goals

Swansea boss Paul Clement had called it a "must-win" game after a desperate run of one point from six games had dropped his side into the relegation zone.

Fernando Llorente headed in Gylfi Sigurdsson's cross after just 10 minutes and Swansea got the stroke of luck they needed 20 minutes from time when Marko Arnautovic blazed over a penalty.

Two points ahead of Swansea, Hull City are Swansea's main relegation rival.

The defeat, Stoke's fifth in their last six league outings, came to typify that of a team left with little to play for this season, with the Potters in relative safety sat 11th in the Premier League.

Stoke's England goalkeeper Jack Butland started for the first time since fracturing his ankle on worldwide duty 13 months ago.

Arnautovic, who netted a stunner against Hull last time out, stepped up to take the penalty but sent his effort soaring into the stand behind the goal. Clement gambled by changing formation but the diamond system sparkled for Swansea and Gylfi Sigurdsson was more unsafe in a central position.

Swansea lost some momentum when Leroy Fer limped away from the action, but they were still the better side and it was not getting any easier for Butland.

There was a flurry of action just before the break as Ki Sung-yueng played Jordan Ayew through on goal, but the Ghana global fired across the face of goal, while at the other end, Saido Berahino headed straight at Lukasz Fabianski.

Ayew nearly embarrassed Butland with an angled shot, but Stoke should have equalised with the final attack of the first half.

Berahino then nearly tied the game up just before the whistle, getting on the end of a Xherdan Shaqiri free kick but his header was straight into the Fabianski's grateful hands.

Swansea responded by going two up just a minute later when Tom Carroll fired a shot from range which took a decisive deflection off former Swan Joe Allen with the ball flying into the top corner, ending a passage of play that effectively sealed the game.

Carroll might have had another moments later when he scampered through but he was denied by a flying Butland save, the improving goalkeeper then standing tall to thwart Ayew at his near post.

On the other side, Watford are coming off of a narrow 1-0 victory at home against Swansea.
