Florida Wildfires Force Evacuations, Destroy Homes

Two fires threaten homes in Golden Gate Estates

The blaze destroyed nine homes, as well as some cars, in the past day and is only 10% contained, officials claim.

Further south in neighboring Collier County, firefighters were making progress on a 5,500-acre fire near the Golden Gate Estates section of Naples. And many times, the worst is in May and June.

More than 2,000 homes are under a mandatory evacuation order in the county, which includes Fort Myers on the southern part of the Gulf Coast.

Crews haven't gained much ground in the past 24 hours.

The area is no stranger to threatening wildfires. The fire damaged a double-wide home and a garage, the email said. "It's great the humidity is up, but it didn't stop the fire".

"As these wildfires continue, there are people who woke up this morning to find their homes destroyed and their lives completely changed", Scott said.

Rainy and humid conditions Saturday and Sunday have helped firefighters keep the flames from spreading, and additional crews from other areas have continued a relentless barrage from land and air to extinguish hot spots.

"It's a very risky task out there", he said.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes late Thursday. That, they said, depends on the progress made fighting the fire. Roughly 100 deputies went door to door Friday.

The Sunshine State has seen a steep increase in wildfires in 2017.

More than 100 brush fires have been reported in Florida during the last several weeks.

The number of arson wildfires across the state is up almost 70% compared to this time past year, the Florida Forest Service said. Fire officials in Polk County have said the wildfire there is suspicious, and it's cause is being investigated.

Hundreds of homes are being evacuated in Polk County due to a large brush fire that has destroyed several structures, according to fire officials.
