Venezuela says it's renouncing membership in OAS

Two killed in worsening Venezuela unrest

"The young man was in a demonstration" in northwestern Lara state "when he received a shot to the head that killed him instantly", the public attorney's department said in a Tuesday statement. Ten people have been killed during near daily clashes this month between security forces armed with rubber bullets and tear gas and protesters sometimes throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails.

According to reports, almost 1,300 people have been detained in clashes since a Supreme Court ruling that stripped congress of its powers. It came a short while after envoys to the OAS approved a resolution convening a special meeting of regional foreign ministers to discuss Venezuela's crisis.

According to Eurasia Group consultants, the demonstrations show that "the opposition is united around the strategy of street protests and is reinvigorated". In an unusual move, Ortega Diaz broke with the government in the immediate days after the decision to denounce it as a "rupture" of the constitutional order.

The decision was later reversed amid a storm of worldwide criticism - and from Ortega Diaz herself.

"I want to express my firmest rejection to violence as an arm of political action". "Politics should not lead us to war".

Maduro's socialist government accuses foes of seeking a violent coup with US connivance, while the opposition says he is a dictator repressing peaceful protest.

"Political leaders of Venezuela, immediate solutions are needed, putting aside any kind of personalities and opening doors to the most healthy and exemplary democratic game", he continued.

The opposition, which blames Maduro, the army, and the national guard for the recent violence in the country, has called for an early presidential election. "With a deeply frustrated populace and severe financial pressures, the prospects may be brighter for a negotiated solution to the multiple crises facing Venezuela, but only if mutual guarantees can be agreed upon", said Dr. McCoy.
