Russia's Chernova stripped of 2008 Olympic bronze for doping

Russian heptathlete stripped of Beijing 2008 bronze

Yes, British heptathlete, Kelly Sotherton, discovered today that she has been upgraded to a heptathlon bronze medal after testing revealed that Russian athlete, tatyana Chernova, was using steroids at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Chernova won heptathlon gold ahead of Ennis-Hill at the 2011 World Championships but was stripped of the medal along with her bronze in the 2012 London Olympics by the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) in November due to blood doping.

The Briton is hoping to get the opportunity to stand on a podium to receive her Olympic medal - but she does not want the one now in Chernova's possession.

She was fifth in the 2008 heptathlon.

'If I am to get a medal I want a fresh, clean one. If it happens, she will be eight months pregnant and the medal will be six years late.

Isle of Wight athlete Kelly Sotherton has been told she will receive a third Olympic bronze medal - after another competitor was disqualified.

Finding out that I've just got another Olympic medal.

Sotherton could become a three-time Olympic medallist should the bronze be reallocated along with a medal in the 4x400m relay, with the Team GB quartet also potential bronze medallists.

According to the IOC's statement, Chernova had been found "to have committed an anti-doping rule violation pursuant to the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing in 2008".

Sotherton was therefore in line to become a back-to-back Olympic heptathlon medallist nearly nine years after following up her 2004 bronze with an agonising fifth place that was upgraded a week later to fourth after Ukraine's Lyudmyla Blonska failed a drugs test.

For professional athletes, there's nothing more rewarding than winning an Olympic medal. She also competed in the 1997 and 1999 Island Games.
