Pakistan PM fires advisor over newspaper leak, army rejects actions

Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif sacks trusted aide for leaking details of high-level security meet to Dawn newspaper

Director General ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor, who heads the military's media arm, said in a tweet: "Notification on Dawn Leak is incomplete and not in line with recommendations by the Inquiry Board".

The recommendations had been put forward to the prime minister by the Inquiry Committee in its unanimous report related to Dawn Leaks Investigation.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today faced a crisis when Pakistan's powerful army rejected his move to sack top aide Tariq Fatemi and demanded full implementation of recommendations by a committee which probed a story on a rift between the army and the government.

The proceedings against PIO Rao Tehsin Ali were recommended under the E&D Rules 1973 on the charges based on the findings of the Dawn Leaks report.

A notification has also been issued by the PM office bearing signatures of principal secretary to prime minister Fawad Hassan Fawad.

The notification from the PM's office added that the role of the editor of Dawn Newspaper, Zaffar Abbas, and reporter Cyril Almeida will be referred to the All Pakistan Newspaper Association (APNS) for "necessary disciplinary action".

According to the notice, the Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi had been sacked because of his alleged role in the Dawn Leaks controversy.

The Pakistan prime minister had narrowly avoided being ousted after the country's top court this week directed a special team consisting of a judge and top military officers to investigate him and his family members accused of transferring assets in tax havens overseas which came to light as part of Panama Papers leaked by Wikileaks two years ago.

Following the Dawn Story, Pervez Rasheed was asked to tender his resignation as the Information Minister over negligence committed on his part while an Inquiry Committee headed by Justice (retd) Aamir Raza was formed to probe the Dawn Leaks.

Hours after the PM's Office issued the directives, the Inter-Services Public Relations said the Army had rejected the notification, calling it "incomplete".

The PAT chief maintained that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz-led government had committed another crime by not implementing all the recommendations of the Dawn Leaks inquiry.

In October, a columnist for Dawn newspaper wrote a front-page story about a rift between civilian and military leaderships over militant groups that operate from Pakistan but engage in proxy war against India and Afghanistan.

The report described what transpired in a high-level meeting in which the civil leadership allegedly criticised the military's policies on militancy.

He did not elaborate on what other actions the government should take.
