Security Council condemns NKorea missile test

UN Security Council to meet Tuesday over North Korea missile launch

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said the country tested a new type of long-range missile "capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead". Outsiders also saw a significant technological jump, with the test-fire apparently flying higher and for a longer time period than any other such previous missile. The country's dictator Kim Jong Un is warning (he's done it before) that the country is well on its way to striking the US mainland and military bases throughout the Pacific Ocean.

North Korea is believed to be developing an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and reaching the USA mainland, though the US military's Pacific Command said the type of missile fired on Sunday was "not consistent" with an ICBM.

Under UN resolutions, North Korea is barred from developing nuclear and missile technology.

The missile flew 787 km (489 miles) on a trajectory reaching an altitude of 2,111.5 km (1,312 miles), KCNA said.

Gulp. Experts are calling the latest missile test in North Korea successful at "a level of performance never before seen from a North Korean missile".

This range is considerably longer than the estimated range of the Musudan missile, which showed a range of about 3,000 km in a test a year ago.

Beijing also denounced the missile test, which violated U.N. Security Council resolutions banning North Korea from using ballistic-missile technology.

But, he added: "We must stop intimidating North Korea and find a peaceful solution to this problem". "This was close to home for Russian Federation".

The intermediate-range ballistic missile may represent a "substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)", Schilling wrote, adding that the missile would allow North Korea to conduct at least some of the testing necessary to develop an operational ICBM without actually launching them.

The UN Security Council has condemned a yet another missile test held by North Korea and has again threatened with new sanctions against Pyongyang if it continues its provocative actions.

"As South Korea's diplomatic situation matures, North Korea should also show a more mature attitude, not a childish one, and contribute to (establishing a better) diplomatic relationship".

North Korea's state media generally confirmed those estimates. It said that with this missile, "the USA mainland and Pacific operation region are in the [Democratic People's Republic of Korea's] sighting range for strike".

Last week, it demanded that the South hand over its spy chief. "This could also be an opportunity for China to show that it can initiate some plausible plans to handle the North Korea issue within the framework of the global community", Su said.

The US said the missile was sacked from Kusong, a city which plays home to much of North Korea's military activity, including munitions factories and uranium mines.

While Trump has said he'd be "honored" to talk with leader Kim under favorable conditions, Haley seemed to rule out the possibility.

The White House, in a statement, said that North Korea has been "a flagrant menace for far too long".

U.S. President Donald Trump warned in an interview with Reuters this month that a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was possible.
