Geneva Open 2017: Stan Wawrinka enters final, Kei Nishikori knocked out

Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori produced a spirited fight back as he bounced back from a set down to book his place in the semi-finals of the Geneva Open last evening.

The big-serving American took the opening set without losing his serve and then went up an early break of serve in the second set against the defending champion.

By reaching his first semi-finals on clay this season, Nishikori took his head-to-head record against Anderson to 4-1 as he continues his preparation for the French Open continues.

Top seed Stan Wawrinka defended his Geneva claycourt title on Saturday, rallying for a set down to see off German outsider Mischa Zverev 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Still, Zverev beat the third-ranked Wawrinka when they last played, at the Swiss Indoors in Basel in October. Still, he soon created a second match-point chance with a forehand crosscourt service return for a victor.

"I would have hated you if you had beaten me in two tournaments", Wawrinka said to his opponent during the post-match ceremony. Zverev opened up a 4-2 lead and routinely held on to his serve book a ticket for the final. The Russia-born German's second runner-up finish comes more than six years after his first, at Metz in France.

Zverev saved two set points when trailing 5-2 on his serve and made Wawrinka serve out for the set.

Murray has had numerous setbacks in 2017, with the 30-year-old diagnosed with shingles in February before sustaining a elbow injury in March that ruled him out of the Miami Open and a Davis Cup tie.
