Russian President Vladimir Putin warns West to 'stop intimidating North Korea'

Missiles are paraded across Kim II Sung Square in Pyongyang North Korea during a military parade in April

The members of the Security Council emphasised "the vital importance" of the DPRK "immediately showing honest commitment to denuclearization through concrete action and stressed the importance of working to reduce tensions in the Korean Peninsula and beyond", the statement said.

The pride in North Korea contrasts with concern in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, which condemned Sunday's launch and called it a serious violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions prohibiting North Korea from conducting long-range missile tests.

"North Korea is capable of continuing to develop longer-range missiles", physicist David Wright said, adding the regime's longest test to date shows they are inching closer to a missile capable of reaching the USA mainland.

The UN Security Council was weighing its response to the latest launch, with diplomats saying that the United States was pushing for a toughly-worded statement of condemnation.

North Korea has said that a missile it tested on Sunday is capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead, state media reported on Monday.

North Korea is banned under United Nations resolutions from engaging in nuclear and missile development, but has conducted its fifth nuclear test and a string of missile launches since the start of past year.

The crazed leader fired the mid-to-long range missile from a site near Pyongyang before it flew 700km (435 miles) into the Sea of Japan near Russian Federation yesterday (May 14).

Outsiders express more skepticism about North Korea's nuclear warhead claims.

Tensions between the USA and North Korea reached a peak in recent weeks, with Washington saying military action was an option under consideration and Pyongyang issuing threats of its own.

This launch of an intermediate-range delivery system signals the maturing of North Korea's missile technology.

Pyongyang has been under United Nations sanctions since 2006, along with an worldwide arms embargo aimed at slowing the development of its banned nuclear and missile programs.

Pyongyang has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of previous year in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States.

A closed-door emergency Council session was set for tomorrow.

Last month, the North put dozens of missiles on show at a giant military parade through the streets of Pyongyang, including one that appeared to be the type of device launched on Sunday.

Newly elected President Moon Jae-in said the South had to "learn to say 'no, '" to the USA and to exhaust diplomatic ways of resolving issues with the North.

North Korea, in defiance of United Nations sanctions, has already conducted five nuclear tests as part of their developments in nuclear weapons and missiles capable of delivering those weapons to their target.

The missile seems to have been equipped with a new, high-powered engine that was tested at the Tongchang-ri launch pad in remote North Pyongan Province in mid-March.

Analysts called this North Korea's most successful missile test ever and a significant advancement in its quest to build a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), reports CNN.
