Dixon, Howard walk away from huge 500 crash

Scott Dixon and Jay Howard were involved in a horrifying auto crash at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday that luckily resulted in both drivers coming away relatively unscathed.

Dixon was launched into the air on lap 54 after slamming into Howard, who had veered into his path after colliding with the outside wall at Turn 1.

Dixon went low to avoid the crash, but it ended up being right in the way of Howard's auto.

Dixon and Howard were cleared and released a short time after being checked at the infield medical center.

Dixon said of the incident: "I'm okay, I was just a little beaten up there". "We had a great shot", he told the AP, "We had gotten a little loose but they had dialed it in". Howard did too. We're yet to hear from Dixon, but Howard feels bad about what happened and that his incident took out another auto. Howard said that forced him to the top of the track, and the British driver for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports wound up in the outside wall.

"I'm fine. I'm really glad Scott's okay". His vehicle was left in complete debris but amazingly the former 500 victor was able to walk away from the accident and called it "a wild ride". It started to turn down, but I'd already picked that way to go.

"Hunter-Reay put me into the gray and into the marbles". To say that I'm unhappy is an understatement.

ESPN's Dr. Jerry Punch later reported that Dixon returned to the care center and left with a walking boot on his left foot and ankle.

'It's just a wild ride and you have to hold on and believe in the safety progress that we've made over the last many years'.
