Iran's president criticizes US after Trump's sharp words

Iran’s Election Signals Reset with the Rest of the World

Tillerson, who is accompanying US President Donald Trump on his first visit overseas to Saudi Arabia, said that deals worth $350 billion have been signed between US companies and Saudi Arabia during the president's first day in Riyadh.

Sunday, a senior United Arab Emirates (UAE) official said the re-election of moderate Iranian President Hassan Rouhani could be a chance for Tehran to reset "its troubled relations" with its neighbors and the world.

"Unfortunately, Americans have always made mistakes in our region", Rouhani said. 'The central power of a nation is its national determination and this will manifest itself in its presence in the country's elections and in casting its votes at the polls, ' told the Persian ruler to more than 300 Iranian and foreign journalists accredited in this capital. The resolution of the nuclear crisis is of crucial importance, as Iran needs the worldwide sanctions to be lifted.

He said on Monday in Jerusalem that shared concern about Iran was driving Israel and many Arab states closer, calling Tehran a real threat in the region, Reuters reported. His supporters look to Rouhani - instrumental in pushing the US-Iran nuclear deal, ending sanctions and allowing foreign investment - to further Iran's engagement with the world and prevent global isolation.

Gargash's comments came with the Riyadh summit, where U.S. President Donald Trump also said Iran was responsible for instability in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia and Iran compete for influence across the Middle East, respectively backing rival political or armed groups in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.

"Our goal is a coalition of nations who share the aim of stamping out extremism and providing our children a hopeful future that does honor to God", Trump said. Ironically, their views are supported by the US government, which sees Iran as a threat, no matter who is in power.

In a jibe at the multibillion-dollar arms deals signed between Mr Trump and the Saudi government at the weekend, he said: "You can't solve terrorism just by giving your people's money to a superpower".

US-Iran relations had reached a major breakthrough, but the prospect of growing Iranian influence in the region unsettled many, including Saudi Arabia, a longtime US ally.

The French leader had called to congratulate him on his landslide victory in Friday's presidential vote.

Rouhani added: "Our missiles are for peace, not for attack". "The problem is that the Americans do not know our region and those who advise US officials are misleading them".

The turnout for this election was historic and unpresented with more than 40 million ballots cast in the presidential race.
