Bounty hunters, fugitive die in shootout at Texas auto dealership

Monterey

New video shows a deadly shootout involving two bounty hunters inside a Texas vehicle dealership.

The pair, 33-year-old Gabriel Bernal and 54-year-old Fidel Garcia, tracked their fugitive, Ramon Michael Hutchinson, also known as Raymond, to Greenville.

Hennepin County Sheriff's Office in Minneapolis issued a warrant for Hutchinson after he failed to appear on a first-degree felony drug charge. That's when the target pulled out a gun and started to fire. Garcia and Bernal drew their weapons.

Police estimated that 20 shots were fired in about six seconds.

The dealership owner, Rick Ford, said two of the men waited several hours for the third man to arrive.

"Mr. Garcia felt the defendant would ultimately appear at that dealership", Peters told the AP.

The men fought as the suspect grabbed the gun and began firing.

Three men are dead inside the showroom. Peters said he finds it hard to believe the two would have claimed to be federal agents. They told employees that a woman who had come by earlier that day to buy a vehicle would be returning with Hutchinson later that evening to finalize the purchase, and they planned to apprehend him when he showed up. "(Garcia) then called me a little bit later on and said he was going to be at a vehicle dealership and that was the last I heard from him".

The Nissan dealership owner says the two men arrived Tuesday afternoon identifying themselves as federal agents. Security and Investigations of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Bernal worked for him.

Peters then handed the investigation to Garcia.

Garcia sat on the board of the Texas Association of Licensed Investigators and another board member, Bradley Smith, described him to the AP as a "gentle giant".

The fugitive was wanted in Minnesota on charges that included assaulting a law enforcement officer. "Fidel was just a great friend", Peters said. He had been free on $50,000 bail and on the run since March.
