Germany and China should cooperate on protecting climate - Merkel

EU, China seek tighter bond to face Trump

Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that Germany and China should work closely together on issues such as protecting the climate at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to endorse a global climate pact.

While the US President is widely reported to be about to announce the US with withdraw from the Paris Agreement, Mr Li said China had "in recent years has stayed true to its commitment".

President Donald Trump is expected to announce his decision on whether to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord Thursday afternoon US time (3 p.m. EDT; 1900 GMT).

He added: "Fighting climate change is a global consensus, it's not invented by China... and we realise that this is a global consensus agreement and that as a big developing nation we should shoulder our worldwide responsibility". Sensing its moment, China is set to capitalise by taking a leadership role on a key global issue for the first time.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Britain would continue to press Washington to reduce risky emissions even if Mr Trump pulls out.

Mrs Merkel said she wanted European Union talks with China on an investment deal to make quick progress and that this would be a precondition to any free trade deal negotiations.

Russian Federation joined the chorus speaking out in favour of the climate accord.

"President (Vladimir) Putin signed this convention in Paris".

"We are going to show them that implementing our targets is very positive for the economy, very positive for developing sophisticated technological advances and it is very positive for the welfare of the citizens", he said.

"Once China's development reaches a certain level, it has to move to a sustainable model, that means we have to push green development", he said.

Chinese Premier Li praised enhanced ties with Germany, and said they had common views on many issues, including respect for global law and opposition to unilateralism.

China accepts its global responsibility and is ready to steer the world toward "green" growth, Li said in Berlin through an interpreter.

While he did not mention the United States or Donald Trump, Mr Li's comments were clearly addressed to Washington. Merkel has been trying to play down any notions that she plans to pivot away from the U.S. in the wake of an impasse on climate change and towards other powers.
