US might return Eastern Shore compound to Russians

On Dec. 29, 2016, President Barack Obama announced punitive measures in response to Russian interference in the election and other aspects of Russia's ongoing acts of aggression. "Trump's willingness to give them back shows where his allegiances are: with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and not with the American people". The cited reasons were the USA intelligence community's consensus that the Russian government had committed cyber espionage to subvert the 2016 presidential election and the harassment of US diplomats in Russia.

This subsequently sparked suspicion of whether the communication between Flynn and the Russian ambassador breached USA law, which prohibits private U.S. citizens from engaging in diplomatic disputes with foreign nationals.

"There has to be a cost and a effect for what Russian Federation has done", an anonymous Obama administration official told The Guardian at the time.

The compound closures had outraged Russian President Vladimir Putin's administration.

"This is a real bullying, bullying as it is, because labeling Russian ambassador a spy, who personally recruits United States politicians is insane".

In response to reports in the U.S. and in Russian Federation that the handover is imminent, the State Department told NBC News, "The U.S. and Russian Federation have reached no agreements", and the next meeting between the two countries will be at the end of the month in St. Petersburg. "Trump would put Americans at risk and send an unmistakable message to foreign powers that attacks on our election process will go unpunished".

The implementation of sanctions began in 2014 in response to Russia annexing the Crimea territory of Ukraine and expanded as Russian active measures to the us and European Union and its military aggression toward its neighbors continued. At a minimum, the timing of this decision, in the midst of ever-growing concerns about collusion between the Trump team and the Russian government, is remarkable and deeply troubling. It's an open assumption that they use Capitol Hill and its public office buildings as a farming ground for potential recruits.

Then-Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin at the time shamed the USA for emptying the compound out during the holiday season.
