Trump promises unfulfilled by House GOP health bill

4 ways the proposed healthcare bill could affect moms

The health care plan recently passed by House Republicans and praised by President Donald Trump is less popular among Americans than Obamacare, according to a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll.

The CBO projected that the American Health Care Act (AHCA) would reduce the national deficit by $119 billion over 10 years, mainly due to its massive cuts to Medicaid and the replacement of nongroup insurance subsidies with tax credits.

And 58% of those surveyed said they were less likely to support the bill due to the Congressional Budget Office's estimate that costs would increase for older people and decrease for younger Americans.

Under the 2010 Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare, employers are required to provide health insurance that covers birth control, except for religious houses of worship, which are exempt.

The Kaiser poll finds support for Medicaid's expansion across party lines: 93 percent of Democrats, 83 percent of independents and 71 percent of Republicans believe it's an important element to keep in a repeal-and-replace bill. The senators say they don't expect their Republican colleagues will write a bill that is radically different from what was passed in the U.S. House.

Some senators want to soften parts of the House bill, especially provisions that would allow insurers in individual states to charge higher premiums to consumers with costly medical conditions. But President Trump and the Republicans are determined on defending their robust health bill, and lately, they seem to have moved a step closer to delivering on their promise to reshape American Health Care without mandated insurance coverage.

Johnson, R-Oshkosh, said Congress' first order of business may be to pass a short-term "market stabilization" bill, which he said could send billions of dollars to states to address volatility in health care exchanges created under Obama's Affordable Care Act. The consistency and predictability of my health care has lifted a huge financial burden, and now I can spend more time focusing on running and growing my business.

The thing Trump appears to have forgotten is that Senate Republicans have, since past year, been telegraphing their plan to use budget reconciliation measured to pass both of those proposals. "Senate Republicans also aren't sure how much they can improve on a score that, in their view, fell far short of an acceptable outcome", the story reports.

The poll was conducted from May 19-May 22 and surveyed a random sampling of 1,205 adults ages 18 and older, living in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

The House passed the AHCA with a 217-213 vote. And the third and final insurer has indicated they will likely leave the market as well - leaving 70,000 Iowans with ZERO options for health insurance next year in the individual market.

In December 2016, more respondents said the GOP bill would hurt their personal health care than thought the same about a straight repeal of the PPACA when KHH asked about that issue.

Stefanik also tried to claim that Medicaid funding wasn't being cut; it was just being restructured.
