$3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline begins service

The oil will flow from the Bakken/Three Forks production areas in North Dakota to a storage and terminal hub outside Patoka, IL and/or down to additional terminals in Nederland, TX, the firm said.

The pipeline crosses a number of bodies of water, including the Missouri River, which is the main drinking water source for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.

The controversial Dakota Access Pipeline progresses Story and Polk counties in central Iowa on September 13, 2016. The pipeline was originally set to go through Bismarck, ND but the community rejected that plan because they were afraid it would jeopardize the Bismarck water supply.

While no Native artifacts have been reported damaged, the commission holds that Energy Transfer Partners should have come to it first before constructing around artifacts, as mandated.

Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault and Tribal Councilman Dana Yellow Fat were arrested on August 12 for allegedly pushing back against a line of law enforcement officers in North Dakota.

"The pipeline will transport light, sweet crude oil from North Dakota to major refining markets in a more direct, cost-effective, safer and more environmentally responsible manner than other modes of transportation, including rail or truck", the company said in a statement.

The pipeline has leaked at least three times since March.

The meeting came one day before the DAPL is expected to begin moving oil from North Dakota into South Dakota, Iowa and ultimately IL for distribution. (ETCO) projects make up the Bakken Pipeline System, which has expanded its capacity based on a successful open season earlier this year, a Texas-based spokesperson for Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) told NGI's Shale Daily on Wednesday. Those did not give Archambault confidence as to how the company would contain and clean a serious spill.

The start of operations does not mark the end of the legal battle, Archambault said.
