Pakistan can't take Kashmir to ICJ: Sushma

Sushma Swaraj

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Indians have been engaged in preserving the environment for more than 5,000 years, and the Paris agreement is "not for money".

"We signed it because of our belief, -a 5,000-year-old belief in environment and our commitment to protecting it.If someone says we signed it for money or under pressure, I'll reject it. India has not signed PCA under duress or any other reason, but exclusively for the environment", Sushma Swaraj said.

Saying that protecting the nature is 5,000 years old tradition of India, the minister made it clear whether the USA stays in the deal or not, India would be there. "I clearly dismiss both accusations". "We are trying to find out if any Indians are stuck there", she told reporters.

In his speech announcing the United States would withdraw from the landmark treaty, Trump repeatedly faulted the agreement as failing to "put America first" and "imposing no meaningful obligations on the world's leading polluters".

"What Trump said is not the reality", said Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj.

"We want to resolve all issues with Pakistan bilaterally but talks and terror can not go together", the minister said.

The foreign affairs minister was addressing a press conference on the completion of three years of the NDA government.

She said New Delhi has taken this issue so seriously that for the first time two ministers from Sri Lanka-the foreign minister and the fisheries minister-and two ministers from India-she and fisheries minister Radha Mohan Singh-held a meeting exclusively on the fishermen's issue.

Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 agreement to cut emissions saying it undermined the USA economy, cost U.S. jobs, and put it at a disadvantage to other nations.

Ms Swaraj also said that PM Narendra Modi had so far spoken thrice to US President Trump, while she and the NSA have been in touch with their counterparts in the US. "But at the same time, terror and talks can not go together", she said. She said the Jadhav issue was taken to ICJ because Pakistan violated the Vienna Convention. "The two countries are bound by these bilateral agreements". "It is wrong", she added. Third, terror and talks will not go ahead together. She clarified that the American move on the Paris accord had not changed India-US ties and the relationship between the two countries was progressing as it did during Barack Obama's presidency.

Unlike other signatories to the Paris agreement, India has not agreed to cap or reduce its emissions outright but instead to greatly increase its use of green energy.

Swaraj also described the proposed changes in H1B visas as a matter of concern.
