PA refuses to pay for Gaza's electricity

A Palestinian was killed by Israeli gunfire during clashes in the northern Gaza Strip today, said the health ministry of the Islamist movement Hamas which runs the territory.

Saudi Arabia and its allies cut off ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting extremism. Qatar denies the allegations.

"Hamas' should have quickly put right the ongoing disaster in the Gaza Strip, instead of criticizing statements made by the Saudi foreign minister, Adel al-Jubeir", who recently demanded that Qatar sever its links with Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

A recent Times of Israel report addressing the situation in Gaza states that conditions for Gazans have become more complicated as a result of new regulations imposed by the Hamas regime. Qatar's support for Hamas extends beyond playing host, as the al-Thanis are major financial backers of Hamas "Last year alone", Block wrote, "Qatar transferred $31 million to Hamas, and the country is expected to pledge an additional $100 million to Gaza".

While the embargo against Qatar is meant to bring it into closer alignment with its neighbors and into the anti-Iran front, the midterm goal may well be to drive Hamas from power in Gaza, unifying the Palestinians under a pliant Fatah that will be economically and politically dependent on a united front of Gulf powers and paymasters. The Islamic militant group has fought three wars with Israel since then.

And while the humanitarian support to Gaza may indirectly serve Hamas, Shobaki says that Doha "saved the PA President Mahmoud Abbas' authority from collapsing a few times when the deficit in the PA budget has been blocked".

On the same day, Palestinian sources confirmed that Hamas officials based in Qatar had left the country.

This week, a high-level Hamas delegation was summoned to neighbouring Egypt, which has had cooling relations with Hamas.

Gaza already suffers from an Israeli-Egyptian blockade, widespread destruction from a string of Israel-Hamas wars, economic misery and chronic electricity shortages.

"I think they are under greater pressure now than before", he said.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, while praising Qatar's emir for working to limit the funding of terror groups, said more needed to be done.

An Islamic Hamas movement's official stressed on Thursday that the movement is very conscious not to line up with anyone in reference to the crisis between several Arab and Islamic states with Qatar.
