Champions Trophy: NZ, Bangladesh play in do-or-die fixture

Tamim has scored 128 and 95 in the two encounters in the ICC Champions Trophy

Earlier, Mosaddek Hossain (3/13) triggered a New Zealand batting collapse towards the end with three scalps as Bangladesh restricted the Kiwis to 265 for 8 in their last group match of the Champions Trophy today.

That was the only bit of celebration the New Zealand players will manage on the day as Shakib and Mahmadullah got down to business.

Mahmadullah remained unbeaten on 102 runs off 107 balls with eight hits to the fence and two sixes.

The Tigers are reliant on the result at Edgbaston if they are to secure a place in the semi-final on 15 June but they will be able to reflect on a calm and impressive chase here.

Though it ultimately proved successful, the run chase started badly for Bangladesh when Tamim Iqbal (0) was out leg before wicket in only the second ball of the innings, beaten by rare swing with the white ball from Tim Southee (3-45). New Zealand were not to be denied their fourth wicket as Adam Milne dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim (14) in the 12th over as the fast delivery crashed through the batsman's gate to send the middle stump cartwheeling.

However, Shakib and Mahmudullah single-handedly turned the game on its head and put Bangladesh within touching distance of victory with an incredible 228-run partnership.

Despite Shakib's evident disappointment when he was bowled with just nine runs needed, his part had already been played.

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson said it was a "very dry" pitch.

Australia have been extremely unlucky as they have notched up only two points so far as both their matches were abandoned due to rain.

Ross Taylor top scored for the Oceanian team with 63 while captain Kane Williamson hit 57 runs.

Bangladesh opted for an extra bowler in pacer Taskin Ahmed, and included Mosaddek Hossain.

Bangladesh's bowlers got on top of New Zealand though, with just three boundaries coming in the last seven overs.

Victory in Cardiff may not be enough for either Bangladesh or New Zealand to reach the knockout stage of a tournament featuring the world's top eight one-day global sides.

The introduction of off-spinner Mosaddek, a part-timer who did not bowl until the 42nd over, was inspired.

Earlier, Mossadek Hossain marked his return to the Bangladesh side by taking three wickets as the Kiwis slumped to a total of 265 for eight.

Generally during partnerships it is seen that the two batsmen in the middle communicate with each other but the Bangladesh innings saw nothing of that sort. "Hats off to Shakib and Mahmudullah".

"They outplayed us throughout their partnership and now they have every chance of going through". Closer to 300 would have been a par score. The boys were outstanding with the new ball, but saying that it was a long way away from a flawless performance. Actually we were not talking when we were building that partnership.

"Obviously I would like to go to the semis and if we do we will hopefully play better cricket than in the last three matches".

"That will be nice (if England win), but we can't just expect Australia to lose that game", Mortaza told reporters. "That is most important for us", he added. "From here, we can only go forward".
