Tropical Storm Calvin forms in Pacific, hits southern Mexico

If the storm were to develop into a tropical storm it would be named Bret.

The third eastern Pacific tropical system of the year has formed, threatening southern Mexico with gusty winds and flooding rainfall into the middle of the week. NASA's Aqua satellite captured a look at the depression just prior to its classification as a tropical storm.

This system is no threat to the US mainland.

"Steady weakening is forecast through Tuesday, and Calvin is expected to become a tropical depression by early Tuesday as the system interacts with the mountainous terrain of Mexico". Delivered at 11 a.m. Monday-Friday.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Mexico's Pacific coast between Punta Maldonado and Boca de Pijijiapan. That's about 45 miles (70 km) north-northeast of Puerto Angel Mexico. "Maximum sustained winds are near 30 miles per hour with higher gusts", the NHC said in a statement. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 millibars.

Calvin should continue to move inland over southeastern Mexico through early Tuesday, the hurricane center said.

Forecasters said Calvin is expected to dump 5 to 10 inches of rain across Oaxaca, Guerrero and Chiapas states with higher isolated accumulations possible, threatening landslides and flash floods. Up to 6 inches of rain is expected to fall in the states of Tabasco, Morelos, Mexico and Michoacán.

Regardless of Calvin's strength, heavy rain is the main threat to Mexico and southern Guatemala.
