Turkish president slams US charges for guards

Eyup Yildirim kicking Kurdish protester outside Turkish embassy

"When an outcome is reached, the department will determine if any additional steps need to be taken". A magistrate judge ordered him held until a preliminary hearing Friday morning.

Public defender David Holman sought home confinement, arguing that Yildirim wasn't a flight risk and had never been convicted of anything before. The State Department has said it had made its concern known to Turkey "in the strongest possible terms".

In a statement released late in the day, the ministry said the decision was unacceptable as it clearly did not come as a result of an impartial and independent investigation. Thirteen men and one woman were charged.

Holman declined to comment to a reporter, as is office policy.

Narin and Yildirim were both participants in the protests, a USA official familiar with the case told The Associated Press.

Police in D.C. have issued arrest warrants for a dozen members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo─čan's entourage for brazenly attacking and beating demonstrators outside their country's embassy in Washington during a visit in May. Turkish citizens were moved from the area by the police, but PKK sympathizers stayed where they were.

Shortly after the clash, footage surfaced showing Erdogan watching from the residence's driveway as members of his security detail beat up demonstrators. We support them. We make sure that they are safe, but we also make sure that they follow our laws.

The events occurred on May 16 immediately after Erdogan's visit with President Donald Trump at the White House, and led to a major rift between the us and Turkey at a time when relations are already strained.

The men, all Turkish citizens, include nine Erdogan security guards and three Turkish police. A video posted online showed men in dark suits chasing protesters and punching and kicking them as Washington police struggled to intervene.

Nine people were injured in the skirmish.

It appeared that authorities may simply rely on the Turkish nationals turning themselves in, an outcome that is unlikely. -Turkish ties. The NATO allies have publicly clashed over a US decision to arm Syrian Kurdish rebels fighting the Islamic State group in Syria.

This isn't the first time Erdogan's bodyguards mixed it up with protesters.

"During the meeting with the Ambassador, it was emphasized that the lapses of security experienced during our President's stay in Washington, which were caused by the inability of US authorities to take sufficient precautions at every stage of the official program, will not overshadow what in every other aspect was a very successful and important visit", it added.

Four people already have been charged in connection with the incident, which occurred during Erdogan's visit to the USA capital.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert declined to say what actions might be taken, but the USA could seek the extradition of the Turkish suspects or bar them from entering the United States. Erdogan's government was similarly defiant following another incident previous year, when Turkish security clashed with protesters outside of the Brookings Institution, where the Turkish president was speaking.

Erdogan was in the United States at the time for a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. "Now, the State Department should double down on efforts to help bring these individuals to justice".
