Trump lashes out at 'bad,' 'conflicted' Russian Federation investigators

President Trump

In the immediate aftermath of Mr Comey's firing, the White House made public, memos from Mr Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions that made a case for getting rid the FBI Director.

Depending on how events play out, the Justice Department could face a crisis not seen since the so-called Saturday Night Massacre when President Richard Nixon's attorney general and deputy attorney general resigned after being ordered to fire the independent special prosecutor overseeing the Watergate investigation, said Jeffrey Cramer, a former federal prosecutor. The intelligence committee is the lead congressional panel on the Russian Federation hacking scandal, including highly publicized hearings with fired FBI Director James Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Warning to believers in the rule of law: There is now a clear and present danger that President Trump is on the brink, possibly within days, of precipitating a constitutional crisis and triggering a national firestorm against his presidency by firing and removing multiple officials involved in the Russian Federation investigation.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.

On Wednesday, the Washington Post reported that Mueller's probe expanded to include possible obstruction of justice by Trump days after Comey's firing.

On Thursday Trump derided a "witch hunt" against him, led by some "very bad" people.

The Republican president has repeatedly complained about the probe, calling it a witch hunt and saying Democrats can not accept his election victory. But he had said last week he felt vindicated by Comey's testimony on June 8 that he was not the subject of investigation while Comey was heading the agency. The scope of the investigation appears to be widening nearly every day, with more matters under investigation and more individuals under the microscope.

The report comes one day after a memo surfaced which reportedly requires members of the Trump transition team to preserve all documents and materials related to the probe, the New York Times reported.

Rosenstein became the Justice Department official overseeing the investigations into the Russian Federation election meddling and Trump after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any matters arising from the 2016 presidential campaigns because he served as a prominent Trump campaign adviser.

Rosenstein did not explain why he issued the statement.

A Trump confidant said this week the president had considered firing Mueller.

Rosenstein also has authority to fire Mueller, if he finds evidence of good cause.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?"

The president has long vehemently denied any collusion with Moscow. The White House denies any collusion.

Trump took to Twitter Friday morning to lash out at the months-long investigation into Russian Federation meddling.

Inside the White House, a sense of foreboding has taken hold on even the most junior staff and up to the Oval Office, as news emerged that Vice President Mike Pence has hired a high-powered outside counsel to represent him.

And if Rosenstein and Brand were both out of the picture, responsibility for the investigation would fall to Dana Boente, the acting head of the department's national security division and the current USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Another report from the Post also claimed the president's son-in-law and aide Jared Kushner's finances and business dealings were under close examination.

The bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee's deep dive into Russia's election meddling, which President Donald Trump has suggested is a hoax perpetrated by the media and sore-loser Democrats, will continue next week with a hearing on the cybersecurity outlook for the next election.
