Senate Overwhelmingly Passes Corker Authored Iran And Russia Sanctions

The Russia amendment was part of a larger measure that targets Iran for sanctions over its ballistic missile program, human rights violations, and other issues.

In other words, the Trump administration may (again) be betting that loyalty to the president - or more likely, fear of his political base - will be more important to House Republicans than the omnipresent suspicions over, and investigation into, possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, as well as the president's seeming attempts to dismiss that investigation.

The legislation, which now moves to the House, also gives Capitol Hill a much stronger hand in determining Russian Federation sanctions policy. Testifying this week on Capitol Hill, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson acknowledged the need to take action against Russian Federation but warned against measures that would cut off dialogue with Moscow.

The vote to strengthen sanctions against Russia - which Senators on both parties made clear was created to send a message on Russian meddling in the 2016 elections - came hours after President Donald Trump had again mocked the investigation surrounding those charges.

The sanctions would codify existing economic restrictions and place new ones in an effort to economically harm specific individuals and Russia's economy.

And while Tillerson might be making policy decisions independent of Trump, according to Bremmer, he urged Congress to make sure that any sanctions bill "allows the president to have the flexibility to adjust sanctions to meet the needs of what is always an evolving diplomatic situation", according to Reuters.

However, with the bill heading to the House, it appears that the White House is now working with House Republicans to weaken the legislation and restore President Donald Trump's power over the sanctions.

The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday to approve sanctions against Russian Federation for its alleged interference in the 2016 election.

"You add up, without firing a shot or shooting a missile, the amount of disruption the Russians have caused in Western societies at large - all that for less than 5 percent of the cost of a new aircraft carrier", Warner said. Bob Corker (R-TN), the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who noted that in many ways it was developed "under the radar" because it was bipartisan in nature. "But I believe that these new sanctions could endanger the very important nuclear agreement that was signed between the United States, its partners and Iran in 2015".

Corker, too, sounded pleased that the bill effectively ties a president's hands when it comes to unwinding certain sanctions on Russian Federation.

In November, Iranian dictator Ali Khamenei threatened us leaders that his country would react if sanctions were passed against his terrorist regime. Rand Paul and Sen.

"However, we can't accept the threat of illegal and extraterritorial sanctions against European companies", they said.
