Authorities: Texas mom left 2 kids in hot auto as punishment

Texas mom arrested after 2 children die in hot car during ‘lesson

Cynthia Marie Randolph, 24, was being held Saturday on two counts of causing serious bodily injury to a child.

According to investigators, when the 2-year-old refused to get out of the vehicle, Randolph closed the door and left them inside to teach them "a lesson," thinking that her daughter would be able to open the door when they wanted to leave, according to WFAA. After being ignored by the girl, Randolph shut the door, went inside, smoked marijuana and then took a two to three-hour nap, according to the newspaper. According to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth, temperatures reached 96 degrees that day.

No bond has been set yet for Randolph, and it is not clear whether she has an attorney.

Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk. When she awoke, she found the children unresponsive inside the vehicle and broke the window to make it look like an accident, the statement said.

Over the past two decades, more than 700 children have died of heatstroke while in hot cars, said Jan Null, a meteorologist who compiles and keeps track of the data on noheatstroke.org.

Randolph repeatedly changed her story under questioning and told a Texas Ranger on Friday that she had found Juliet and Cavanaugh playing inside the auto, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

After noticing the children were missing, Randolph told officers she found them unresponsive in a locked vehicle and broke a window to rescue them.

Throughout multiple interviews, police say Randolph changed her story several times about what lead to the death of her children.

She then told officers that she had to break a window and rescue the children, then called 911, authorities said.

But Randolph later admitted to authorities that she left the kids in the auto.
