'Cars 3' speeds past 'Wonder Woman' at box office

The third "Cars" movie from Walt Disney Co.'s Pixar topped the box office in theaters, beating a slew of middling new releases and dethroning two-time champ "Wonder Woman".

The first two films in the "Cars" franchise have reflected the growing clout of markets overseas.

Disney and Pixar's "Cars 3" is headed for a $51 million-plus USA debut, the lowest in the franchise but easily enough to chase the competition off the road and win the weekend. "Wonder Woman" fell to second place, but still collected $41.3 million to pad its gaudy three-week total of $275.1 million.

The Mandy Moore shark thriller "47 Meters Down" also exceeded low expectations, earning $11.5 million for a fifth place start. It is also the 16th Pixar movie to open at #1.

Now in 2017 we get CARS 3, and Owen Wilson's Lightning McQueen is back with his four wheeled pals to take on a new breed of racecar, the slick, slimy and all around arrogant Jackson Storm played by Armie Hammer.

Cars 3 bumps Wonder Woman out of first place, but the superhero movie is still going strong.

Interest in Cars 3 may soon change thanks to positive feedback the animated movie has been receiving from both critics and audiences. Titled after Shakur's 1996 fourth studio album of the same name, the film stars Demetrius Shipp Jr.as Shakur and Kat Graham, Lauren Cohan, Hill Harper, and Danai Gurira in supporting roles. "All Eyez on Me", $27.1 million 4. Sony's R-rated bachelorette party gone wrong pic earned only $8.1 million against a $20 million budget. Lucia Aniello directed the film.

"Rough Night" will land in seventh for the weekend behind its fellow newcomers, "Wonder Woman", the second weekend of "The Mummy" ($13.9 million) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" ($8.5 million).
