SKorean president calls for NKorean Olympic participation

South Koreans identify preferred PyeongChang Olympic athletes, sports

South Korea's sports minister wants to create an inter-Korean hockey team with neighbors North Korea to compete in next year's Winter Olympic Games.

"We don't have enough time to organize between the two Korean teams, but I am scheduled to meet North Korean (International Olympic Committee) member Chang Ung next week - I will propose positive participation in the Pyeongchang Olympic Games".

One idea was for North Korea to host some skiing competitions at the Games.

This follows reports that South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-in, has suggested the two countries lead a north-east Asian bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

His appointment is aimed at drumming up public support for PyeongChang Olympics, which will be held from February 8-25, 2018 in PyeongChang in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The catchphrase was named after Masik Pass in eastern North Korea where soldiers were helping to build a ski resort as part of a push for more sporting facilities.

The proposal could receive criticism from the United States, which is reeling from the death of Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia student who was arrested by North Korea in 2015 for allegedly stealing a propaganda sign during his trip to the country. His parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said their son received "awful torturous mistreatment" while in North Korea. But talks broke down and the North boycotted the Games.

A North Korean demonstration team from the International Taekwondo Federation will perform alongside the WTF Demonstration Team during both the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony of the Championships in Muju.

The news comes amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, following the North Korean regime's missile tests, as well as the death of Otto Warmbier, a U.S. student who suffered severe neurological trauma while serving part of a 15-year sentence for stealing a political banner. USA officials arranged for his release last week, but Warmbier arrived home in OH in a coma-like state with severe brain damage.
