SPD ends video game channel after Lyles shooting conversation criticism

Cops who shot Seattle mom are identified

Friends and family of Charleena Lyles say she was much more than the police's account of a 30-year-old woman who confronted two officers with kitchen knives and was shot dead last weekend inside her Seattle apartment.

On a weekday afternoon in March, Seattle police officers fenced off a city block as they tried to persuade a suicidal man in the middle of a downtown street to drop a knife.

Lyles was killed after police officers responded to reports of a burglary near Seattle's Magnuson Park.

Hundreds of people turned out for a protest march Tuesday night, and responses from the city's mayoral candidates after Lyles was killed included calls for improved mental health systems, further changes in police training and demands for transparency in the shooting's investigation. She had been arrested and charged with obstruction of a public officer and harassment of a law enforcement officer on June 5. "They could have used other (less lethal) force". "And that's why we have to say, once again, murder is murder is murder is murder".

The officers went to the apartment - where several children were present - after a call Sunday morning about a burglary, police said.

But a confrontation erupted.

Even if he had brought the Taser, Anderson maintains in police transcripts it would not have been the "appropriate" tool for handling Lyles' abrupt and seemingly violent outburst toward the officers.

"She was talking normally and interacting with us normally and then all of a sudden, she's trying to stab me with a knife", Anderson recalled.

But a video posted Wednesday in which Sgt. Sean Whitcomb discussed Sunday's fatal shooting of Charleena Lyles struck many as inappropriate, although Whitcomb's video-game character just walked around rather than firing any shots. There are sounds of rapid movement, the woman yelling "Get ready, (expletive)!" and the police radioing for help and repeatedly warning her to get back before five shots are fired.

Three children were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, police said.

Lyles, whom relatives called "Leena", grew up in Seattle and was largely raising two boys and two girls on her own - including a 4-year girl with Down syndrome - but she had a supportive network of siblings, cousins, aunts and others, Williams said. "We'll conduct this investigation thoroughly".
