House votes to strengthen illegal immigration laws

Illegal Immigrant Fence

WASHINGTON - Warning of threats to public safety and national security, the Republican-led House on Thursday approved two bills to crack down on illegal immigration, a key priority for President Donald Trump.

The House also voted, 257-167, in favor of legislation increasing penalties for those who re-enter the US after being deported.

Kathryn Steinle was shot dead at San Francisco's Pier 14 while out for an evening stroll with her father along the waterfront. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, who pleaded not guilty to the crime, had been released by sheriff's officials months earlier despite a request by immigration officials to keep him behind bars.

During his floor remarks, Barletta discussed meeting the family of Derek Kichline, a 29-year-old father of three young children who in 2006 was murdered while working on his truck in Hazleton by an illegal immigrant who had been released by law enforcement a number of times, including by the sanctuary city of NY.

Kate's Law would increase maximum penalties for undocumented immigrants who continue coming back to America after they've been deported.

No doubt, proponents of this law will point to Kate Steinle's killer as to why entering the country illegally should be a criminal act.

Barletta on Wednesday was one of four House members who met at the White House with President Donald J. Trump for a roundtable discussion about the need to pass legislation to strengthen enforcement of our immigration laws.

But, much like another Trump immigration policy, a border wall between the USA and Mexico, Kate's Law would do more to appease immigration hardliners than to fix the USA immigration system.

In addition to Kate's Law, the House also passed a companion piece of legislation called the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, which would cut federal funds for sanctuary cities. All levels of government should be responsible to follow and enforce the laws of our nation. "So we have to take steps", Wilson-Root said.

The Secretary of Homeland Security can refuse to transfer illegal aliens in DHS custody to authorities that refuse to cooperate with Federal immigration authorities.

The so-called No Sanctuary for Criminals Act proposes to block federal grant money to sanctuary cities that do not work with federal immigration authorities to process criminal illegal aliens, according to ABC 15 Arizona.

The sanctuary measure was approved, 228-195.

Rep. LaMalfa Speaks on the House floor in support of H.R. 3003 and H.R. 3004. "I think it will encourage people to report crime", she said. He says he is "calling on all lawmakers to vote for these bills and to save American lives".

President Trump's policies have already had an impact, with 64 percent fewer apprehensions and inadmissible entries at the southwest border compared to the same time a year ago.

"For six years, we have been just getting by - cutting resources as the world becomes more unsafe, asking more and more of those who serve, and putting off the tough choices", said Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, the House committee's chairman.

"In a statement, Lorella Praeli, the director of immigration policy and campaigns at the American Civil Liberties Union said the bills were "riddled with constitutional violations" in a statement issued Wednesday".

Nobody stands above the law - not the self-righteous local officials who obstruct the law by taking part in the sanctuary city movement, and not the criminals who return to the USA again and again and commit violent crimes.

The bill also contains a provision-known as Sarah and Grant's law - which would ensure that illegal aliens are detained pending their removal proceedings, rather than let them continue to linger in US communities for weeks, months and even years after they have been ordered deported.

Further, a research published by the Pew Centre published April 10 shows that the Federal law agencies are making more arrests in immigrant-related offenses than other crimes - including drug, property, and gun crimes - than they were a decade ago.
