Officer shoots and kills woman in Fulton

Don Damond, Justine's fiance, wondered how police ended up killing the person who had placed the 911 call.

An Australian woman has been shot dead by police in the United States city of Minneapolis in an incident in which the officers did not have their body cameras turned on. The woman, Justine Damond, was originally from Australia and lived in Minneapolis with her fiancé Don Damond. Police said at a press conference Sunday that they were responding to an "unknown trouble" call when the shooting occurred.

However, police said the officer's body worn cameras and a camera in their squad vehicle had been switched off at the time of the shooting which may hamper the investigation.

"Two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault just north of the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue South just before 11.30pm Saturday". "I have questions about why the bodycams weren't on".

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges has described the shooting as "tragic".

She said: I've asked for the investigation to be expedited to provide transparency and to answer as many questions as quickly as we can.

"We have few facts at this point", she said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed they're providing consular support to the family of an Australian woman killed in the US.

Investigators are now scrambling to figure out if any video of the situation exists.

Damond was set to get married next month.

"Our lives are forever changed as a result of knowing her, she was so kind and so darn amusing, she made us all laugh with her great wit and her humor", Damond said.

The woman's family in Australia released a statement through the country's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, saying it's a "very hard time", according to NBC News.

He is reported to have been away on a business trip when she died.

According to her website, Ruszczyk trained as a veterinarian and later became a yoga instructor and life coach.

Police Chief Janee Harteau said that she has numerous same questions as Ms Damond's family.

For reasons not yet understood, the officer in the passenger seat fired his weapon at Damond, shooting her through the driver's side door.

After an hour of her death, hundreds of women gathered outside the Damond home to hold a vigil for the woman.
